This linen tablecloth with a lotus design was made by Chris Lebeau, though we don't know exactly when. It's funny how a tablecloth can be art. Usually, art has to hang on a wall, right? But look at how the light catches the pattern, subtle and repeating. It reminds me that making art is often a process of layering, like laying down threads one by one to build up an image. The linen has a tactile quality. You can almost feel the texture of the weave, the way the pattern is embedded in the fabric. See how the lotus design radiates outwards, like ripples in a pond? It's a gesture, a mark of the artist's hand, even though it's made by machine. It brings to mind the work of William Morris. Both artists knew that even everyday objects can be beautiful, and that beauty can elevate our lives. Art is not just for museums, it's for living with.
