Les Douze Mois de l'Année: Germinal
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This illustration of ‘Germinal’ is by Marthe Romme, and it's hard not to imagine the artist delicately layering the watercolor to conjure the image of this ethereal figure. I love the controlled yet playful use of color. It's intriguing how Romme balances precision with whimsicality. The figure's dress, a striking blue, contrasts beautifully with the patterned skirt, its circles like seeds hinting at growth. Note how the gray fur trim adds a soft, tactile dimension to the otherwise flat surface, and the way the black ground anchors the floating figure in a sort of theatrical space. Look at the line work on the veil, so delicate it's almost invisible. Romme seems to be in conversation with artists like Erté, but with a lighter, more dreamlike touch, highlighting the beauty found in transience and transformation. This piece reminds us that art is always an exchange, a sprouting of ideas across time, each artist adding their unique hue to the ongoing dialogue.
