Hans Jegli the Younger created this drawing, Jacob Fleeing Laban in the Land of Canaan, around the early 17th century. Note the figure of Jacob leading his family and livestock through a rugged landscape: the sheep are a motif here, representing not just wealth but divine favor, echoing the pastoral ideal seen across ancient Near Eastern art. This symbol of shepherding appears again and again, from the Good Shepherd of early Christian art to the Arcadian landscapes of Renaissance painting. It speaks to a deep human longing for simplicity and divine care. Here, in Jacob's flight, it is not just an escape, but a re-enactment of ancient migrations, a return to a promised land. This collective memory, etched into our subconscious, evokes a powerful sense of hope and deliverance. Like a recurring dream, this imagery resurfaces, transformed yet familiar, each time carrying the weight of centuries of longing.
