Søren Henrik Petersen made this depiction of "Odin, set forfra" with engraving in 1822. Petersen was working at a time when the rediscovery of Norse mythology resonated with a growing Danish national identity. Here, Odin is presented as a figure of authority and wisdom, seated on a throne accompanied by his familiars, the ravens and wolves. How does Petersen both uphold and challenge perceptions of masculinity and power? The softness of the engraving medium lends a certain approachability to a figure often associated with war and power, whilst retaining a degree of classical heroic masculinity. Notice Petersen's use of line and shadow to emphasize Odin's physical strength and regal bearing, and contrast it with the quiet stillness of the animals around him. This engraving prompts us to reflect on the roles of gods in shaping cultural identity, and how artists can re-imagine mythical figures to resonate with their contemporary audiences.
