Hendrick Goltzius created this portrait of Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert using engraving, a medium that lends itself to meticulous detail and stark contrasts. The overall visual impression is one of formal order, framed by an elaborate oval border filled with symbolic objects. This structured arrangement invites us to decode the layered meanings embedded within. Goltzius's mastery is evident in his rendering of Coornhert’s features, capturing a sense of intellectual intensity. The objects surrounding the portrait—books, musical instruments, and weapons—act as semiotic markers, indicating Coornhert's multifaceted persona as a scholar, artist, and advocate for political and religious freedom. Each element contributes to a complex interplay of signs, reflecting the cultural codes and values of the time. Consider how the formal structure of the engraving reinforces the subject's identity, presenting him not merely as an individual, but as a figure deeply embedded in the intellectual and political discourses of his era. The precision and deliberate arrangement of the engraving are a testament to how art functions as a site of ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation.

The skin-like surround (cartouche) of the inscription below the portrait has auricular forms along its lower edge. This was probably their earliest appearance in the Netherlands. Adam and Paulus van Vianen, the silversmiths from Utrecht, knew Goltzius well.
