How do you feel the crosshatching contributes to our perception of depth and form here? Editor: It creates such depth, like I could reach in and touch those stones! Does the fragmentation of these friezes affect how we view them, compared to when they were whole and installed in the tombs? Curator: Precisely. We are presented with remnants, not complete narratives. Each fragment offers glimpses into Etruscan aesthetics and the Renaissance revival of interest in antiquity. The lines are the architecture, quite literally. Notice how Piranesi uses line weight to suggest not just form, but also texture and the play of light on weathered stone. Editor: I'm beginning to appreciate how Piranesi transforms historical documentation into something so artistically compelling through technique. Curator: Exactly.
