Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made this woodcut, "Nude Wearing a Black Hat," without a known date, but you can see how he’s really going for it with the stark contrast of black and white, making every mark count. It’s all about the process here; you sense him hacking away at the wood, making decisive cuts to bring the figure into being. Look closely, and you can feel the textures of the wood in the print. The figure is surrounded by these aggressive, angular shapes. See the hatch marks used to create shadows? It’s like everything’s been chiseled out with maximum impact. Focus on the woman’s hat, such a simple form, but it anchors the composition. Kirchner reminds me of Munch, how he fearlessly explored intense emotions through the physical act of making art. There’s a raw honesty in this piece, an unapologetic embrace of the power of art to provoke and challenge. It’s a reminder that art doesn't always need to be pretty; it can be a wild, untamed force.

It was his lover Doris Grosse who stood model for Kirchner’s painting "Nude with Hat" (Städel Museum, inv. no. SG 1168), which testifies to his close familiarity with the art of Lucas Cranach (1472–1553). This woodcut develops that pictorial idea further. Yet even if the broad-brimmed hat and the pose of the body and hand lead us to suppose direct Cranach quotations, the link to that artist is first and foremost in the room-dominating presence of the naked body. Years later, Kirchner once again devoted himself to this pose in wood – in the sculpture "Sad Woman" (Städel Museum; inv. no. SGP206).
