Curator: Here we have "The testament and last words of Marie Antoinette," an engraving believed to be made anonymously between 1793 and 1819, now residing here at the Met. It's quite the textual and symbolic construction. Editor: My initial reaction is that it appears simultaneously ornate and haunting, like a document attempting to elevate the subject while reminding us of their fall from grace. Curator: Exactly. Notice the neoclassical architectural framework, within which the artist embeds a portrait of Marie Antoinette surrounded by clouds and what appear to be stylized wings. The engraving is crammed with symbolic images! Editor: The symbols definitely do a lot of work here. What are your thoughts about this bust that seems almost beatified and yet is embedded into a text? The words have power but feel displayed rather than read. Curator: Well, given the tumultuous political climate following the French Revolution, presenting Marie Antoinette in this light likely aimed to evoke pathos. Think of it: wings and the bust presented as a relic. It certainly softens the perception of the monarchy in the aftermath. Editor: True, that makes perfect sense. There's a deliberate construction of martyrdom going on here. The letter must also represent some element of the continued story? The symbolic images down below featuring the angel of death and urn feel obvious. Curator: Those post-Revolutionary symbols underscore mortality but speak to public perception. Engravings such as this became important vectors to consolidate political messaging after her execution. Look how prominently her supposed last words are placed along the base, another emotional tool. Editor: And in so doing, the artist offers a visual narrative that extends beyond factual representation, inviting reflection on power, memory, and, of course, propaganda. Thanks for that insight! Curator: Thank you, that was a great conversation!
