Curator: My first thought is, "Wow, what a tangled mess!" It looks like red thread trying to escape a square. Editor: Indeed! This intriguing piece is by Yukinori Yanagi, a contemporary Japanese artist born in 1959. What you see before you is a meditation on boundaries and confinement. Curator: Confinement, yes, I get that! The red feels almost… bloody, a violent constraint. Are we meant to feel trapped? Editor: Perhaps. Red, as a colour, is so loaded: passion, anger, danger. Yanagi is a master of symbolism. He seems to be asking us what are the self-imposed limitations we’re all bound by. Curator: It makes me think of the invisible walls we build, the things that hold us back, or maybe, things that keep us safe. Editor: A double-edged sword, precisely. It is a thought-provoking piece.
