Joshua Flint made this painting called 'Momentary Suspension', and it’s all about speed, dust and smoke. I imagine Flint starting with a wash of thin paint, maybe letting it drip and stain a bit, building up the image in layers. He uses a limited palette, mostly muted blues and grays, but then BAM!, there's this pop of red in the rider's jacket, drawing your eye right in. You can almost feel the chill of the wind and the grit in your teeth, and you have to wonder where the rider is going and why, but that’s the beauty of it, right? The way he paints the dust kicked up by the wheels, it's almost like the whole scene is dissolving, becoming a memory. I love how it captures a moment that's both fleeting and eternal. It reminds me a little bit of Gerhard Richter and his blurred photos, where the act of painting becomes a way of questioning what we see and how we remember.
