This etching, 'Untitled (El Train),' was made by Harry Hering, but the exact date is unknown. The dark, moody tones, achieved through cross-hatching, give a sense of the artist feeling their way into the image, responding to what’s developing on the plate. I’m intrigued by the way Hering uses the stark contrast between light and shadow to define the architectural forms of the elevated train and the buildings below. It’s like he’s carving the image out of darkness, letting the light reveal certain areas while obscuring others in deep shadow. If you look closely at the streetlamp on the right, you’ll see how the light seems to emanate from it, casting long, dramatic shadows that stretch across the street. It’s a simple detail, but it adds so much atmosphere to the scene. This piece reminds me of the graphic work of Käthe Kollwitz, who also used etching to create powerful images of urban life and social issues. Like Kollwitz, Hering captures the gritty, raw energy of the city. Art's always talking to itself, isn't it?
