John Miller created this work titled 'Cornish Riviera', a landscape painting in which the coastline and sea merge into a dreamlike vision. Miller, born in 1931, lived through a period of significant social and cultural change, witnessed through the second half of the twentieth century. The Riviera, traditionally a playground for the wealthy elite, presents questions of class and access. Here, the scene is absent of any figures and the luscious, fluid strokes of color allow viewers to reflect on their own position in relation to the landscape. As Miller once said, "I want to convey the feeling of being there." The painting invites contemplation on themes of belonging and exclusion. Miller’s work captures not just a place, but a feeling, blurring the lines between reality and the dream of escape.
