This photograph shows four people at a tennis club, sometime in the past. It's an anonymous work, which gives it a certain freedom. The grayscale is simple, direct. The image is about something else, something outside of the image. There's a casualness, but also a formality. They're posing, but they don't look entirely comfortable. The soft grays add a dreamy quality, like a memory fading at the edges. The light falls unevenly, creating a contrast between the figures and the background that makes it feel very real. Look at the line of the net! It bisects the frame, slicing the scene in two. But it also unites them, holding them together in this shared moment. It reminds me of work by photographers like Lisette Model, who also captured ordinary people in all their awkward, beautiful humanity. Ultimately, photography, like painting, is about capturing a moment, a feeling, and letting it resonate beyond the frame.
