Playing Card: Skeleton by Anonymous

Playing Card: Skeleton c. 15th century

Curator: Here we have an intriguing piece from the Harvard Art Museums, a playing card entitled "Skeleton." The artist is, sadly, anonymous. Editor: Well, it's definitely seen better days! There's a melancholic vibe, though, like a macabre serenade in miniature. Curator: The skeleton playing a musical instrument is a common motif, isn't it? A symbol of mortality but also life, isn't it? The dance of death, the universality of it. Editor: Exactly! It reminds me of those medieval dances, and almost invites you to join in the music, while another skeleton awaits its turn. Curator: This card captures that feeling—the inevitability, but maybe even a hint of acceptance? Editor: Absolutely, it feels very honest about the whole cycle. It’s a small artwork carrying some pretty big stuff. Curator: It does, indeed. A tiny reminder, perhaps, to embrace the music while we can. Editor: Beautifully put. Cheers to that.
