Hyman Pearlman made this small pencil drawing called "Dipper" with incredible tenderness. Just look at the gentle gradations, and the care with which he coaxes the form from the page. I imagine him with his pencil, carefully rendering the highlights and shadows of this humble object. It's like he’s in love with the dipper, you know? He notices how the light catches on the metallic surface and the way the handle curves so invitingly. What’s so lovely is he’s celebrating this everyday object, elevating it through careful observation and attention. It reminds me of other artists who find beauty in the mundane, like Giorgio Morandi with his bottles or even Van Gogh with his shoes. They teach you how to really see. Pearlman here, like all artists, shows us the world through his unique lens, and encourages us to slow down and appreciate the simple things.
