This photograph by Th. Lantin captures a general view of the World Exhibition in Antwerp. The composition is dominated by strong receding lines which give an impression of depth and linear perspective. The tonal range is limited, yet the contrast between light and shadow helps define the architectural forms. The eye is led from the foreground, marked by the solid geometry of the exhibition halls, towards the distant skyline punctuated by the Eiffel Tower. Note the semiotic interplay between the modern industrial structures and the more traditional buildings. The photograph freezes a moment in time, encapsulating the optimism of technological progress and the tension between the old and new. This is a discourse on modernity, as it challenges our fixed understanding of space and representation. Notice again how the stark, functional lines of the industrial buildings contrast with the more ornate details of the older architecture. This photograph functions aesthetically and forms part of a wider cultural and philosophical narrative of the time.
