Curatorial notes

Georg Maria Eckert captured the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart in this photograph. The most striking element is the column topped with a figure, a clear assertion of power reminiscent of ancient Roman victory columns. These columns, symbols of triumph and authority, echo through time, from Trajan’s Column to countless monuments across Europe. The Stuttgart column, however, isn't just about military might. The figure atop, likely Concordia, embodies harmony and unity. It is interesting to note that this column, erected in the 1840s, stands as a symbol of reconciliation and the aspiration for social order, rather than violent conquest. This photograph is a window into the past and it shows how symbols morph, carrying echoes of earlier meanings while adapting to new cultural landscapes. It evokes a sense of collective memory, reminding us how societies grapple with their past and project their hopes for the future.
