"Italian Mountainous Landscape with Lake Nemi" is a watercolor painting by John Robert Cozens from 1790. The artwork depicts a sweeping vista of a mountainous Italian landscape with Lake Nemi, a prominent feature in the distance, surrounded by lush vegetation and a meandering river. The scene is dominated by a towering cliff on the left, topped with a ruined tower, while the foreground features a flock of sheep grazing peacefully under a large tree. This painting, like many of Cozens' works, exemplifies the Romantic sensibility of the late 18th century, emphasizing the sublime and evocative power of nature. Cozens's work, known for its atmospheric washes of color and loose brushstrokes, captured the dramatic beauty and emotional resonance of the Italian landscape, making it a significant contribution to the development of British landscape painting.

John Robert Cozens sojourned twice in Italy for extended periods of time. He made many drawn studies there, on which he later based this water colour. Cozens wanted to paint sublime landscapes. This found expression not only in the depiction itself, but also in the muted, broad passages of wash, meant to lend the image a universal grandeur. Specific touches of bright colours, such as red, were used only for details.
