Carl Buergerniss made this sweet bible book marker in watercolor, probably in his studio, or maybe even in situ, from life. I can imagine Carl leaning in, trying to capture the sheen on the satin, that perfect rose-y pink. Look how the fabric folds and drapes, almost like a delicate, soft sculpture. The roses feel so tender and real, not too precious. They have a wonderful, earnest quality about them, like folk art. It reminds me of other painters who’ve taken on the challenge of capturing fabric, like Titian or Velasquez, but with an added layer of homemade charm. It feels like an offering of sorts, carefully rendered with loving intention, a devotional object made with humble materials. These artists are all in conversation, across time, constantly inspiring one another’s creative practices. And ultimately, isn't that what painting is all about? An ongoing exchange of ideas, an embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
