This is a roll of striped ribbon, made by Gustav Schnitzler. It’s made of fabric, and in this case, it’s all about the interplay of colour and texture. You get a sense of a thoughtful process. The magenta and green, separated by fine lines of black, grey and orange, create a strange kind of harmony that tickles your senses. The matte surface of the ribbon contrasts with the shiny finish of the stripes and is deeply satisfying. Take a look at where the ribbon peels away from the roll on the left. It’s a tiny gesture, but it encapsulates the whole piece. The tension between the neat, wound layers and the unruly tendrils hints at hidden depths, memories, and stories. This reminds me a little of the the painter Etel Adnan. This piece isn’t about having all the answers, but about embracing the questions.
