This roll of black satin ribbon, woven with two black stripes by Gustav Schnitzler, is more than just a functional object, it's a sculpture of pure potential. Imagine the artist's hand, guiding the threads, coaxing the material into being. I love to think about process, and the way the corrugations of this piece create depth, shadow, and a tactile sense of movement. The black undulates, it’s almost liquid; a solid form becoming something more atmospheric and changeable. Think about the many abstract painters who have used tape in their paintings, and how the clean lines and hard edges create a visual tension with softer, more organic forms. This ribbon is similar. It’s humble, yet there is a strange elegance and beauty in its simplicity. The roll is like a conversation, a silent dialogue between Schnitzler and all the other artists who have explored the interplay of line, texture, and form.
