Isaac Israels made this chalk drawing transfer on paper. It's a kind of ghostly image, barely there but also insistent. The texture of the paper is really important here. The way the chalk dust clings to the fibers creates a kind of visual noise. You can almost feel the process, the artist pressing the chalk onto the page, the slight give of the paper. Look closely, and you can see this smudge on the right side, like a thumbprint. It makes me think about the artist's hand in the process. It’s a reminder that art isn’t just about the image, but also the making of it. It reminds me of Rauschenberg's erased de Kooning. The erasure, the trace, the residue - it's all part of the story. Art is an ongoing conversation, an exchange of ideas, and a constant reinterpretation of what came before. It's about embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
