This letter to Héloïse Bernard-Bodin, written in 1894, is all about flow. Look at how Bernard uses that blue ink, letting it spill and rush across the page in these winding lines. You can tell he's really in the moment, caught up in the act of writing. I love how the material aspects are so present; the texture of the paper, the way the ink pools in places, all adding to the emotional feel of the letter. There's this spot, right in the middle where the ink seems to almost burst; a dark, concentrated knot of feeling. It makes me think about the weight of words, how they can carry so much emotion, joy, or pain. Bernard reminds me a little of Van Gogh in the way he uses the physical materials of art to channel an emotional intensity, but of course it's a different medium. Ultimately, this letter reminds us that art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas and feelings that stretches across time.
