Roy Lichtenstein etched this plate of a "Woman on Horseback" in 1950. It's this delicate dance of line and tone. I can almost imagine Lichtenstein bending over the plate, scratching away with his tools. The figure emerges tentatively, surrounded by abstract shapes. Is it a landscape? A dreamscape? I wonder what he was thinking about when he made this. Was he looking at other artists at the time, like Paul Klee, also playing with line, form, and abstraction? Or maybe he was just doodling, letting his hand and mind wander. The lines are so fragile, so tender. They remind me of the way we sketch out ideas, not quite sure where we're going. And those open, undefined spaces around the figure – they invite us to fill in the blanks, to co-create the image with the artist.
