This is a page of diary notes, and light and color observations, by J.A. Jerichau (II). It’s a quick sketch done in pencil, right there, on the spot. You can almost feel the energy of Jerichau’s hand moving across the page, capturing a figure with just a few lines. Look at the way the lines vary in thickness and pressure, some barely there, others darker and more defined. It’s like he’s thinking through the drawing, letting the pencil lead him. The texture of the paper shows through, giving it a raw, immediate feel. Notice the way he suggests form with simple hatching and shading, focusing on the essential shapes. It feels so personal. This reminds me a bit of sketches by Paula Modersohn-Becker, who was also interested in capturing the essence of her subjects with minimal means. Ultimately, art is always a conversation between artists, across time and space.
