This sketchbook page was made by J.A. Jerichau (II) with pencil, and it shows a body in action, caught in a freeze-frame gesture of Strakkeleg. I can imagine Jerichau hunched over this little book, sketching rapidly. The pencil lines are so tentative, so searching, as if the artist is trying to find the form within the chaos. See how the marks build up, layer upon layer? It's like a conversation with the paper. What was Jerichau thinking as they made it? Were they trying to capture a fleeting moment, or were they exploring something deeper about the human condition? I think they knew something of Rodin, maybe of Munch. These artists are all in conversation, across time and space. I think of my own work, how one painting is always a response to another. Each stroke a question, an answer, a new beginning.
