Max Beckmann made this etching, "Vrijend paar op een bed", we're not sure when, but what jumps out is how the lines are so alive! They scratch and dance, trying to capture the weight and tangle of bodies in a space. Beckmann’s mark-making feels urgent, like he’s wrestling with the image. Look at the dense hatching around the figures, how it creates depth but also a kind of claustrophobia. The bodies, entwined, almost seem to fight the lines that describe them. Notice that the lines aren't precious; they're raw, vulnerable, and leave something to the imagination. Beckmann reminds me of Picasso, always reinventing himself, but with a darker, more Germanic twist. Both of them show us that art isn’t about perfection. It's about feeling and the messy, beautiful struggle to make sense of the world.
