This photographic portrait of Oscar Straus, the composer, was created by Nicola Perscheid, a master of tonal control, using light and shadow to give the image depth and drama. What I think is really interesting is the velvety darkness that almost swallows the subject, right? But then you get a glimpse of his face, framed by that incredible moustache, and the fur collar which, of course, catches the light. I can imagine Perscheid in his studio, playing with the light, coaxing out these details, and making the portrait look so contemporary. It's a reminder that artists are always playing with the same basic elements – composition, texture, and the range from light to dark – trying to find new ways to say something about their subject. There's an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, and what Perscheid achieved here continues to inspire the creative process of artists.
