Curatorial notes

Machiel Hendricus Laddé made this photograph of Reijer Doets in Amsterdam, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. The sepia tones create a kind of instant nostalgia, don’t they? Like something you’d find tucked away in your grandmother’s attic. Look closely at the way the light falls on Doets' face. It's soft, almost dreamy, which gives him a gentle, approachable quality. There’s something really beautiful in the way the image hasn't been overly manipulated. You can still see the texture of the photographic paper, the little imperfections that remind you of its age. It's not about flawless representation; it's about capturing a moment in time, with all its inherent flaws and vulnerabilities. Laddé's work reminds me of the portraits by Nadar. Both artists had a knack for capturing the inner essence of their subjects, not just their outward appearance. And like all good art, it leaves you with more questions than answers, pondering the mysteries of time, memory, and the human condition.
