Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing of two children at an unknown date using graphite, I imagine. I'm immediately drawn to the head on the left and the use of hatching. It looks like Cachet may have been trying to work out the form of the head through lines, almost like a sculptor might build up clay. I'm curious about why the artist chose this high vantage point, looking down on the subjects, almost as if they have been caught unawares. Is it an intimate gaze or a detached study? These are the kinds of questions artists ask themselves. Drawing is a way to pause and really see. Cachet is in a conversation with other image makers such as Käthe Kollwitz and Elizabeth Peyton. By drawing, painting, and printing, we can get closer to understanding the world and each other.
