Bartholomeus Ziesenis created these six panel designs using graphite. They are structured in a grid-like pattern, each panel exhibiting a unique arrangement of allegorical objects. The pale grey hue of the graphite lends a sense of classical antiquity to the work. The use of symbolic objects is striking. Each panel contains items representing abstract concepts such as unity, caution, fear, love, vigilance, and freedom. Consider the panel with the rooster, framed by ornate garlands: the rooster is a symbol of vigilance, a reference to watchfulness and alertness. This drawing explores how objects can be imbued with symbolic meaning through careful composition and placement. Ziesenis prompts us to consider how visual elements function within a structured framework to communicate ideas. Each panel becomes a semiotic exercise, inviting interpretation and reflection.
