This silver medal, crafted by Reynier Arondeaux, depicts William III’s landing at Torbay. Note the prominent figures of William, sword in hand, and Britannia, symbolizing England. Consider the motif of Britannia, seen here offering William her hand. This gesture echoes classical antiquity, evoking images of emperors greeted by personifications of conquered lands, signaling legitimacy and divine approval. Yet, Britannia, an allegorical figure, also has roots that predate even the Roman Empire. The image also portrays William as a liberator and rightful ruler. This imagery connects William to a lineage of historical figures who have similarly appropriated gestures and symbols to affirm their authority. Just as in ancient times, these symbols resurface, charged with the weight of history.
