Here we have 'Sydus' by Pablo Palazuelo, and what strikes me is the stark contrast between the black geometric shapes and the raw, textured canvas peeking through. It looks like a process of excavation, revealing form from darkness. The texture is crucial. You can almost feel the weave of the canvas, rough against the smooth, matte black. And that black! It's not just a color, it's a presence, a void, but one that's actively shaped and disrupted by these angular lines. It’s like he's building this structure from the ground up, each line a deliberate choice. Look at the way these lines don't quite meet, they feel incomplete and temporary. Palazuelo's work reminds me a bit of some of the early abstractionists like Malevich, in that they were stripping away everything unnecessary to get to the core of visual language. But while Malevich was interested in pure form, Palazuelo seems more invested in the act of searching, of never quite arriving at a fixed point.
