Petros Malayan made this oil painting of flowers; it's a study in colour and form. The brushstrokes are visible, and feel intuitive. The paint is applied in layers. You can see how Malayan built up the texture, especially in the petals. The colours are rich, but muted, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. I really like how the cool blues of the table contrast with the warm reds and yellows of the flowers. Check out the little purple flower lying on the table; it's a small detail, but it adds a lot of interest to the composition. The way the light hits it, and the way it echoes the other blooms, makes it sing! It reminds me of some of Bonnard's paintings, in the way that it captures a fleeting moment of beauty. It's a reminder that art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas across time. Ultimately, it's up to each viewer to decide what it means, and to find their own personal connection to the work.
