This exquisite porcelain parrot was made at the Meissen Manufactory, founded in Germany in 1710. Meissen was the first to unlock the secret of hard-paste porcelain in Europe. The parrot is perched atop a tree stump next to a lidded pot, and the whole assembly is supported by an elaborate gilt base. The dazzling colors and intricate details of this piece were achieved through many firings in a kiln, each at a different temperature, and each requiring a master craftsman's expert eye. The overall effect is one of opulence. Consider the social context: Meissen porcelain was prized by royalty and the wealthy. The intense labor required to produce such objects made them luxury goods, symbols of power and status. Appreciating the skill and effort behind this sculpture encourages us to think critically about labor, materials, and value.
