Ohara Koson likely made this print of a peacock and hen in the early 20th century, using traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques. The process begins with a drawing, which is then transferred to a series of wooden blocks, one for each color. The blocks are then carefully carved, leaving the printing areas raised. Next, the colors are applied in layers, each requiring precise alignment. The paper, likely a thin, absorbent washi, is pressed against the block to transfer the ink. What is wonderful about Koson's prints, is that he elevated the traditional craft of woodblock printing to fine art. He took advantage of the medium to create subtle gradations of tone, and capture the texture of the peacock's feathers, as well as the fine details of the pine tree. In doing so, he took what had been a commercial practice and asserted its aesthetic potential. This print is a beautiful example of how an artist can transform a traditional craft into a work of art.
