Georges Michel created this drawing, "Horse before a type of cart", using graphite. At first glance, the skeletal outlines of the horse and cart, rendered in graphite, might appear unfinished. Michel's strategic use of line and form, however, evokes a sense of dynamic movement within a static medium. The horse, while depicted with minimal detail, is full of latent energy, ready to pull the barely-there cart. Michel’s interest isn’t in the concrete reality of the horse or cart but in their potential, their capacity for action. By presenting the horse and cart in a state of potential energy, Michel challenges the viewer to consider the gap between representation and reality, between the object and its possibility. This emphasis on potentiality is a larger commentary on the era's changing perceptions of space, movement, and the role of representation itself.
