Editor: Here we have Frits Freerks Fontein's photograph, "Ship 'Zuiderzee' with passengers," from 1898. It's quite a sepia-toned scene. There are layers of ships docked here. It makes me wonder, what draws your eye when you look at this work? Curator: Formally, my eye is drawn to the layered composition and how the light articulates form. Observe how the differing textures are rendered through tonal variation, the metallic sheen of the closest ship contrasting with the distant vessel. Editor: So you are looking at how he constructed this as a picture? Curator: Precisely. Note how Fontein uses the varying scales of the ships to establish depth within the frame. How does the composition relate the proximity between the ships and figures, the linear nature of which drives an intimate engagement of pictorial space within its surface? Editor: The lines from the closest ship point you back toward the second and then finally a third in the far distance. So you aren't worried about who is on the ship or where they're going? Curator: The subject is of less significance than the structural relationships created through light and shadow, line and mass. We can consider the historical implications later, once a solid base is formed on composition alone. Editor: That's fascinating. I typically consider subject and context right away, but I can see how analyzing the formal components unlocks different ways of considering the scene. Curator: The intrinsic structure offers just as rich a narrative, and in many cases a universal approach free from subjective interpretation. Editor: Thank you. I am eager to contemplate this. I guess that is a fresh perspective.
