Composition 1982

This "Composition" was made by Yaacov Agam using weaving techniques. These processes aren't exactly traditional, but rather borrowed from domestic life. The woven materiality influences the artwork’s appearance, with inherent qualities of substance, texture and color; it also imbues it with social and cultural significance. Agam used techniques and traditions alongside those of craft and fine art. These aren't traditional art materials but are very much tied to wider social issues of labor, politics, and consumption. It's interesting to think about the amount of work involved in the production process, in which materiality, making, and context are important in understanding the meaning of the artwork. This approach challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
