Antoon Derkinderen produced this design for a stained glass window dedicated to Hugo de Groot. Derkinderen lived through a time of cultural transition, when artists were seeking to redefine national identity through their work. The artist's use of decorative borders, and restrained palette evoke a sense of historical reverence. At the top and bottom of the design are ornamental friezes that resemble stylized interpretations of classical motifs. This design invokes a sense of tradition, while the symmetrical and stylized presentation subtly pushes against academic conventions. Derkinderen, like many artists of his time, was concerned with creating art that spoke to the soul of the Dutch people. Here, he creates space for reflection on Dutch history while gently questioning the established artistic norms. This is a space where one can consider the relationship between honoring the past and embracing new modes of expression.
