'Twee dansende boerenparen', or 'Two Dancing Peasant Couples', was etched by Auguste Danse in the 19th century. Danse has scratched a network of fine lines onto a metal plate. These lines hold ink, which is then transferred to paper, creating the image. The quality of the lines speaks to Danse’s skill as a printmaker, as well as his careful observation of form. The rough texture of the etched lines mirror the coarse clothing and raw energy of the dancing figures. The image vibrates with the lively motion of the dance. Danse chose to depict not an idealised vision of rural life, but an earthy, physical scene. In doing so, he elevates the labor and leisure of ordinary people to the level of fine art. This reminds us that art is not just about the finished product, but about the process, materials, and the cultural context in which it’s made.
