Ynez Johnston made this print called ‘Mexico’ in 1949, and it's a real trip into a different kind of seeing, you know? The way she carves out these shapes, it's all about process, like she's thinking with the knife, letting the material guide her. The black and white is so stark, it’s like a high contrast dream. Check out the texture, you can almost feel the wood grain, right? The way the white pops out against the black, it's not just about what she's depicting, but about the physicality of the medium. Look at the horse on the left, the way the lines are so jagged and the shapes are slightly askew, it's this awesome mix of representation and pure abstraction. Johnston reminds me a bit of someone like Paul Klee, always experimenting, always pushing the boundaries. It’s not about perfect representation, but about opening up new ways of experiencing the world.
