Mariojosé Ángeles made this untitled work with watercolor, and ink washes, I imagine, on paper. There’s this feeling of floating, suspended forms, like an otherworldly being or a dreamscape conjured with delicate washes and quirky, dark linework. I wonder about Mariojosé’s process. Did they start with the pinkish, fleshy form at the center, letting it bleed and bloom across the page? Or did the linear elements come first, mapping out a kind of skeletal structure for the composition? There’s a real push-pull here between control and chance, intention and accident. See how the watery blues and yellows at the bottom seem to seep and spread organically. It's like Ángeles is letting the medium do its thing, embracing the unpredictable nature of watercolor. And then there are those stark, almost graphic lines that define the edges of the forms, anchoring the composition with a sense of precision. It reminds me a little of some of Picasso’s more whimsical drawings, where he’s playing with line and form in a way that feels both spontaneous and deeply considered. It’s like they’re both inviting us to see the world anew, to find beauty and meaning in the unexpected.
