Modest Cuixart made this unnamed work using a printmaking technique, maybe an etching, resulting in a landscape of dark, spidery marks on a vibrant orange ground. It reminds me that artmaking is always a process of layering, of building up images and ideas bit by bit. The texture here is so interesting, isn't it? You can almost feel the roughness of the etched lines, the way they bite into the paper. The dark marks give a sense of depth and complexity that contrasts with the warm orange, like a sunset seen through a screen of tangled branches. Notice the way the lines build up in the center of the image, creating this dense, almost claustrophobic space. It's like the artist is inviting us into a thicket of their own making, a place of both beauty and unease. Cuixart reminds me a little of Antoni Tàpies, another Spanish artist who was interested in texture and materiality. Both artists seem to embrace ambiguity, inviting us to find our own meanings in their work.
