Curatorial notes

Benoit Farjat created this engraving, "Madonna of Loreto, within a niche with an angel on either side," in the 17th or 18th century. During this time, Europe was deeply enmeshed in religious and political conflicts, with the Catholic Church seeking to reaffirm its authority through art. Here, we see the Virgin Mary depicted in a traditional, idealized form, holding the infant Jesus. Flanking the central image, angels kneel in adoration, reinforcing the divine status of mother and child. However, this representation also speaks to the complex construction of female identity within religious contexts. Mary, elevated as a symbol of purity and motherhood, embodies both power and submissive virtue. Beneath the holy scene, we can see a depiction of the town Loreto. This artwork invites us to consider the intersections of faith, gender, and power, prompting questions about the roles and representations of women within the historical narrative of the church. It calls us to reflect on the emotional resonance of these images and their enduring impact on cultural values.
