Comedian 2019

Maurizio Cattelan made this artwork called "Comedian" by taping a banana to a wall. I love the idea that something as simple as a banana and a piece of duct tape can become this big statement. Imagine Cattelan in a supermarket, picking out the perfect banana. Not too ripe, not too green. It is a painting of everyday life. And then the gesture of taping it to the wall – it’s almost absurd! And it forces you to ask, "Why is this art?" It’s not about skill or technique, it's about a gesture, a question, and a moment. The duct tape flattens the banana. It makes me think of Duchamp and his readymades, challenging our ideas about art. It reminds us that art can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, the simplest acts can provoke the biggest questions. It's a banana and tape, but it also makes me think of art history. I want to eat it!
