Kateryna Lysovenko made this work, *Gardens of Sorrows*, using ink, or watercolour, or maybe both. It seems to have come into being through intuition, by embracing trial and error, and seeing what emerges. I can imagine Lysovenko standing here with her brush, trying to capture something essential with a minimal kind of language. The thin washes of grey and black let the white of the paper show through, creating a sense of lightness and space. Look at how the figures are rendered with such delicate lines, almost like ghosts in the garden. Maybe Lysovenko was thinking about the cycle of life, or the fragility of human existence? The way these figures huddle together could be interpreted as a kind of solace, or protection from the sorrows of the world. The artist's hand has a clear intention here. It's not photorealism but something else, tapping into the more obscure corners of the mind. Artists are always in conversation with each other across time, inspiring each other's creativity. This embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
