This roll of lilac satin ribbon, by Gustav Schnitzler, lives in the Rijksmuseum. It makes me think about the hidden qualities of objects, of the way even something as functional as a ribbon has its own subtle beauty. The color is just gorgeous; that pale lilac is so smooth you want to touch it. You can almost feel the cool, silky surface just by looking at it. The ribbon is wound neatly, but there’s a paper insert on top with some scribbled text. I love the contrast between the perfect coil of satin and the crumpled, imperfect paper. It’s like a little moment of organized chaos. In my own work, I often try to find that balance between structure and spontaneity. Schnitzler seems to be doing the same here, reminding us that even the most ordinary objects can be appreciated for their texture, color, and quiet beauty. Like a Morandi bottle painting, but make it fashion! There's always more to see if we take a closer look.
