Lillian E. Hall created this block print, "The War Effort - on the Factory Line," which illustrates a woman working diligently on a munitions factory line. Dominating the scene are the munitions themselves, their cylindrical forms arranged almost like votive offerings. These shapes echo ancient symbols of fertility and power, now repurposed for the machinery of war. The rhythmic repetition of these forms, combined with the woman’s focused activity, recalls the Fates spinning the threads of destiny. In antiquity, these goddesses controlled the course of life; here, we see a modern reinterpretation where human labor shapes instruments of life and death. Consider how, in earlier times, textiles were symbols of creation and sustenance; now, we have this transformation into tools of destruction. This image evokes both the mechanical precision of modern warfare and the enduring human capacity to imbue objects with symbolic power.
