Wanda Gág made this striking wood engraving, Paper Cutter, at an unknown date, with such beautiful consideration of the interplay between black and white. I just love the way it seems to revel in the potential of its own process. Look at the lines that form the shape of the machine and the surrounding objects, but also create areas of solid black and white, that almost vibrate with energy. The texture is so rich you can almost feel the grain of the wood. The white lines make a wonderful contrast to the black background, it’s like the light is dancing on the surface, bringing the image to life. Notice the attention to detail, the way Gág renders the textures of the paper, the machine, and the ropes, making each element distinct yet harmonious. It feels like the objects in this scene are humming with a quiet intensity. Gág's print reminds me of the work of artists like Käthe Kollwitz, who used similar techniques to convey powerful emotions. In the end, art is all about exchange: the exchange of ideas, techniques, and emotions across time. It’s a conversation that never ends, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.
