About this artwork

Jean Cornu created this terracotta sculpture, “Aeneas Receives Arms from Venus,” around the turn of the 18th century. Notice how the figures are arranged in a dynamic, almost precarious, vertical composition. The neutral tone of the terracotta accentuates the sculptural forms and their classical aesthetic. Aeneas, standing firm, receives arms from Venus, who is supported by another figure above. Cornu uses the figures' gestures and flowing drapery to create a sense of movement and drama. This contrasts with the static nature of the material. The triangular composition directs our gaze upwards, emphasizing the divine intervention in human affairs. It's a study in how shape and form can convey both physical and metaphorical weight, exploring the intersection of human destiny and divine will through its structured, dynamic arrangement. The material acts as a semiotic vehicle, communicating themes of heroism and fate.
